This item is a Pick Up and Delivery Tariff map issued by the Merchants and Manufacturers Transfer Company, for part of Hamilton County and Northern Georgia. This was most likely owned by Ruth Simpson, it is also possible that she designed the map, but not confirmed. On the front there is a map that labels parts of Hamilton County and Northern Georgia. Areas labeled on the map include: East Ridge, Brainerd, East Lake, Alton Park, Lookout Mountain, Highland Park, North Chattanooga, Signal Mountain, Hixon [sic], Red Bank, White Oak, East Chattanooga, Lupton City, Rossville, and Fort Oglethorpe. The map gives numbers (1-14) to specific postal zones of the map. This map was issued pre-five digit zip codes, which was developed in the 1960s. The term ZIP is actually an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan and was intended to make US mail travel more efficiently.
At the top of the map it reads, "Merchants and Manufacturers Transfer Co. Pick Up and Delivery Tariff. All deliveries will be made on the same day as the call is received except calls received after 3:00 P.M. may be delivered the following day. Rates for shipments under 2,000 lbs. where no unit or piece exceeds 150 lbs. Special Rates on Volume Shipments made by arrangement. Phone AMherst 6-7388. (See back of sheet to determine charges.)"
On the top of the back side it reads, "How to determine your charge: Select the zone you are located in from map on front. Determine the zone where the consignee is located. Then find your zone on the tariff and from your zone to your consignee's zone will give your charge."
Under this it names all of the zones (1-14) and how much it will cost to send an item to another zone located on the map.
to send something from Zone 1 to Zones 13 & 14 would cost 50 cents.
