Digitized letter from Francis E. McIlvainc to the McIlvainc Brothers, September 17, 1864. The letter serves as a letter of introduction of Captain H. N. Synder, late of the 59th Illinois Infantry Volunteers, to Francis' brothers. Francis vouches for Snyder saying he is an honorable gentleman and a thorough businessman.
There is a related envelope with a mailing address that someone, in a more contemporary hand, has written across the front in pencil "Letter of Recommendation."
Note: The 59th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry saw action in Chattanooga and Chickamauga.
