Digitized letter from Allan Smith to Hibbard (Mr. E. H. Phelps, Chatham, Mass.), dated January 4 and January 3-, 1864. In the letter Smith informs Hibbard that it is very hard to receive a job as Paymaster Clerk but should the opportunity arise he will recommend Hibbard for the position. Smith expresses frustration at the amount of paperwork that needs to be processed and mentions processing the Veteran Volunteers. He mentions witnessing the battle of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge and complains about the recent cold weather.
The author mentions "Veteran Volunteers" and he is referring to the Veteran Reserve Corps, which consisted of disabled veterans who were still able to perform light duties.
