Digitized letter from George Young to Lottie Lasher, dated July 30, 1864, from Rooms General Court Martial, Chattanooga.
In this letter written by George Young to his friend Lottie, he says how moved he was by a poem she'd sent him, and how he hopes the sentiments expressed in the poem were meant for him. He expresses some sadness at the fact that he could not join Lottie with friends and his mother back home, and says "I am sorry that I enlisted again, but I felt it my duty to go and so I did." Then he tells a funny story about two of his messmates covering for him when he took geese intended for Gen. Steadman's dinner: "Well you got the geese and we got H**l!" He recalls his New Year's dinner in Courtland, Alabama, when he and his mess mates enjoyed a rare treat--a large amount of chicken and potatoes.
