Digitized letter from George Young to Lottie, dated July 4, 1864, evening, written from Rooms General Court Martial, Chattanooga. He tells her she's the one who understands why he enlisted, not for the money, but for patriotism. He says that before she gets this letter she will read in the paper that Gen. Sherman has taken Atlanta. He says he spent a quiet July 4th, turning down invitations to a picnic and a dance, preferring to read Shakespeare in his quarters and answer her letter.
