Photograph of the Signal Mountain Cement Company on Suck Creek Road (now part of the factory is used by Buzzi Unicem - Signal Mountain Plant. They are a cement manufacturing company out of Bethlehem, PA). The Tennessee River is behind the factory in this image and the tip of William Island is visible. This photo was likely in the collection because it goes with the other pollution images (2014.001.083-2014.001.087), as Signal Mountain Cement Company was a major air polluter. "In the early 1970s, air pollution problems at Signal Mountain Cement made front-page news. Cited by the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Board in 1970 for odor and particulate violations, the company began to take action toward cleaning the air." (Source: Chattanooga Times Free Press.). At the time this was taken it was being run by General Portland Cement Company.
