Description One photograph of the Wheland Foundry complex, with the river in the background. It is an aerial view. The plant was located at 2800 South Broad Street in Chattanooga.
The foundry was established by George W. Wheland in Athens, Tennessee in 1866. Moved to Chattanooga 1873. Acquired by Gordon P. Street in 1945, closed in 2002 and demolished 2004. Company built sawmill components, oil field drilling equipment, steam engines, anchor windlasses and automotive casings. During World War I and World War II the plant produced artillery shells and guns.
