Photograph, "U.S. Military Bridge and Boat from Ross' Landing" written on back of the photo. The steamboat in the picture is the "Lookout". "U.S. War Dept. General Staff photo" is stamped on the back of the photograph. Chris Barr at the Chickamauga Battlefield offered this information: The encampment visible in the distance, on the north shore of the Tennessee River, was not laid out in a military order as the Army would have laid out their camps. It was haphazard and organic, so it was likely a civilian encampment, and the only known civilian encampment in that area was Camp Contraband, for the United States Colored Troops (USCT). This photograph may be the only image to show Camp Contraband. The military encampment visible in 2013.006.093 and 2013.006.002.e was located to the right of the image, just out of the viewpoint of this image.
