Description This slide is labeled "Craven's Robert House, 1855; Rebuilt 1866, Lookout Mountain Tennessee." The description is handwritten in black ink on top of the printed date, November 1967. This is a view of the front of the home. The photographer is unknown. This is an image of the Cravens House located halfway up Lookout Mountain. The home was built in 1855 by Robert Cravens who ran a prominent iron business in Chattanooga. During the Battle of Chattanooga, both the Union and Confederate armies used Cravens' home as a headquarters and an observation post. The heaviest fighting of the "Battle Above the Clouds" took place on the same level plateau that Cravens' house was situated on. However while the home sustained minor damage during the battle, it was later destroyed by a drunken Union brawl. After the war, Cravens returned and rebuilt the home in 1866.
