This slide is labeled "Log House, Elise Chapin Sanctuary, Chattanooga Tenn." The description is hand written in black ink and is written on top of the printed date, November 1967.The photographer is unknown.
The description states that the photograph was taken at the Elise Chapin sanctuary. More than likely "The Elise Chapin Wildlife Sanctuary" which is located at 900 North Sanctuary Road, Chattanooga TN 37421 near East Brainerd.
The only cabin at the Elise Chapin Sanctuary is "Spring Frog Cabin" which was built in 1750 by Spring Frog the Cherokee Naturalist. Throughout the years following the time of its construction, the cabin was modified by both Cherokee and white settlers who lived and farmed in the area. Eventually the cabin would be home to the Walker family. Robert Sparks Walker a Chattanooga author, poet, and naturalist who founded the Chattanooga Audubon Society was born in the cabin and subsequently spent most of his life there and on the grounds surrounding it. After Walker passed of a heart attack which happened on the grounds at the sanctuary, he was buried beside the cabin. The cabin has been restored and is presently furnished to reflect the style of a 19th century pioneer family.
However, the only buildings listed at the property at the Elise Chapin Wildlife sanctuary are, The Spring Frog Cabin and the Visitors center. When comparing this photograph with photographs of the "Spring Frog Cabin" one will find many differences. The cabin in this image has a brick fire place whereas Spring Frog has stone. Spring Frog has Shutters on the windows, this cabin does not. It seems that unless this cabin has now been completely remodeled to look like the cabin at Elise Chapin Sanctuary at Audubon Acres it is not Spring Frog Cabin and has possibly been mug-labeled by the photographer. In this collection there are a total of three images of this same cabin, two different views. They are all verifiably the same building. and non of the three images resembles the present Images of "Spring Frog Cabin".
