Description Wheland Company Plant photo 1956. The black and white photograph depicts what appears to be an average workday at the Wheland Foundry, located at South Broad and 28th Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The foundry was established by George W. Wheland in Athens, Tennessee in 1866. Moved to Chattanooga 1873. Acquired by Gordon P. Street in 1945, closed in 2002 and demolished 2004. Company built sawmill components, oil field drilling equipment, steam engines, anchor windlasses and automotive casings. During World War I plant produced artillery shells and guns.
