United Confederate Veteran's ribbon, badge and button. The badge is largely metal with a piece held in badge that looks celluloid. Badge states "Tennessee." Attached to the badge is a red ribbon with gold writing. Says "N.B. Forrest Camp, No. 4 Chattanooga" and "9th Annual Reunion Charleston, S.C. May 10, 1899." Attached to the center of ribbon is a button with an image of a Confederate battleflag, the letters "UCV" and the dates "1861-1865." Tassels hang down from the bottom of the ribbon. The maker's label is on the back side of ribbon. Belonged to James P. Smartt.
Notes: James P. Smartt was born 11 September 1844, died 9 September 1914. He served in the 16th Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A. Smartt moved to Chattanooga in 1878. He served as historian for the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park Commission and was a charter member of the N.B. Forrest United Confederate Veterans Camp.
